Franks, One of the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel?

pages decorative bandeau, reminder of the one of the main entry home page and the localized home page

Despite that the appartenance of the Franks, like a German confederation of peoples, to the German stock, thence to the the Indo-European peoples, it's not impossible that they might be strongly related to the question of the ten lost tribes of Israel

When the Assyrians took over the kingdom of Israel, in northern Judaea, they deported the ten tribes of Israel, which had formed that kingdom, with its capital city in Samaria. Those people were never to return to the Promised Land, giving rise to the legend of the ten lost tribes, the tribes of Israel which never returned and which lost in the meanders of History. That lore persisted among Jews as Eldad, maybe a Karait dissenter, a merchant and traveler, in the 9th century A.D., evokes a independent Jewish state in eastern Africa, inhabited by the tribes of Dan, Asher, Gad, and Naphtali a offsrping of the Ten Tribes. A persistent -and plausible- view is that the Scythians, those nomadic people of Central Asia -or the Cimmerians- might be one of those lost tribes, having their dominions, in the 1st century B.C. from the Black Sea to the Altai and the Pamir. More accurately, the Cimmerians might well be those lost tribes of Israel, which had settled, eventually, North of the Black Sea as they were disturbed there by the move West of the Scythians proper, a real Indo-European people

The Cimmerians, in turn, are likely where the Franks might originate, coming late in Germany, by the end of the 4th century A.D. only. Which gave birth to the Merovingian legend that the Franks were Sicambri, coming from the Sea of Azov, or the heirs to the Trojans. The story might be more thoroughly explained like that some descendants of the tribe of Juda, through Zara, the twin to Phares -who himself is the ancestor of the line of David, thus of Christ- eventually migrated to the land of the Assyrians, mixing there with the ten tribes when those were deported by the Assyrians. The ancestors of the Franks there are not exactly belonging to the ten tribes but to the tribe of Juda instead, thus to the kingdom of Juda, which was, as far as it is concerned, destroyed by the Babylonians. It is that fund of data which brings to that famed idea that the Frankish kings are of a Jewish lineage, related to the lineage of David, and thus to Christ. The end of the southern kingdom of Juda, in the 6th century B.C. alienated the right of governmentship from the house of Juda in its elder line of David and had it passed to the younger line of Zara, the people of who went to meet the ten tribes in Assyria. Some links however were weaved between the two lineages, with, for example, a Merovingian ancestor, Marcomir IV, marrying a heir -to the sixth generation- of Anna, the cousin to the Virgin Mary. The Celts, themselves, under the form of the Cimbrians, are related to the ten tribes, bringing a relation further between the Frankish kings and their Gallic subjects. The other Germans themselves -of them the Saxons- might be related to the ten tribes proper, with their king Odin later divinized

That ascendency of course allows for the assertion that the Frankish kings of the three races of the Merovingians, Carolingians and the Capetians, have a privileged link with the lineage of Jesus and thus that specific role, in terms of destiny and religion, which is attributed to the Frankish race, and to France, generally

How this bodes with the Indo-European theories or the theories related to the descendants of the sons of Noah remains relatively unclear. An idea is that a first population of the world really happened like described by the archeology and the genetics, with some migrations from the Fertile Crescent into Europe bringing the neolithic revolution there to the original, prehistoric populations, and the migration of the Western, Indo-European people into a zone from Germany and Ireland to Iran and India, forming a first wave of male-oriented, kingdoms of aristocratic warriors. The Frankish elite, as far as they are concerned, Jewish in origin, and from the house of Juda, followed path which led them into the lands of the Assyrians where they met the ten lost tribes of the time of the deportation from Samaria, and becoming the race of the Trojans, they eventually came in Europe, Germany and they became the kingly race of the Franks, descendants of David, and passing to the Roman catholicism by the end of the 5th century A.D. with the baptism of King Clovis. A part of the question of the relationship between the Gauls and the Franks' elites is solved too by that idea, with a part of the Gallic elites being too of Jewish ascent through the Cimbrians

a page, in French, http://www.vexilla-regis.com/textevr/MISSIONdivineFRANCE.htm is giving the text by the marquis de la Franquerie, authoring name of André Le Sage de La Franquerie de La Tourre, secret camerier of several popes -of the them Pope Pius XII in 1939- a French fundamentalist catholic of pre-WWII time, who is the main author of these views

A alternate view might be that the 10 Lost Tribes be deported to the northern confines of Assyria where they would have become there the Cimmerians. A part of those would then be found back in Troy before the city be destroyed by the end of the 11th century B.C. The Romans, according to the legend exposed in the Eneid by Virgil, were claiming to descent from those Trojan people. As the eastern Roman emperor, when he was claiming any right upon western Europe, was logically using such a descent, non less logically did the Francs, since about 600 A.D., claimed that Trojan descent at the way of better supporting towards Byzantium that they were the main strength of people in the West of Europe. Hence later some might believe to such a intellectual construction and infer the link between the Franks and the lost 10 tribes from it! Not the less that the parentship of the Franks, thus, with the ligneage of Christ only could go into the direction of the role that the Franks, through the baptism of Clovis, had played into the return of the former western Roman empire into the Roman catholicism, from the arianist heresy. The role played by the Persian Indo-Europeans into the Jewish history might further not be due to chance only but a form of sign instead that the Persians, issued from the same breed of people than the western Indo-Europeans, have allowed Davidic heirs of the Juda tribe to be back into the Judaea. The Trojan origin of the Franks had been born about 1200 A.D. at a moment when the Capetian kings of France were trying to harden their legitimacy as such

->About the Trojan Origin of Franks
The reference to Troy is found among several Western peoples as a founding myth: Rome, Gauls, Britons, Franks, Belgians, Cyrenaics, Elymes of Sicily, Venetes or even Normans. These myths stabilized and got richer in the Middle Ages. The reference is to Aeneas, son of a Trojan prince, cousin of the king, who fled the defeat of Troy (Trojan War, around 1200 B.C.) His history was mainly perpetuated by Roman author Virgil (1st century A.D.) in his Aeneid, a kind of Odyssey seen from the side of the vanquished of Troy, which recounts the wandering of Aeneas, which eventually led to Lazio, current Italy and found Rome there. Except for some of the legends of Trojan origin that must be attributed to memories from the Greek world, when it dominated the Mediterranean, one may say that much more of these legends is due to the desire to legitimize a people in relation to Rome. If Rome had been founded by Aeneas, a given people had also to have been. As far as the Franks are concerned, such a myth could play for the whole of their dominions, or not to take in account a same origin for the Gauls -- see just below. That myth was also to allow the justification of the opposition to Byzantium: the Byzantines descended from the destructive Greeks of Troy! Even the Turks, which one wanted to be different from the other ennemy peoples during the Crusades, were attached to the myth. The Trojan origin of the Franks appeared, around 660 A.D. in the Frankish world with Fredegar's Historia Francorum, a unknown chronicler of 5 older chronicles concerning the world and the Franks. Francion, brother of Aeneas settled between Rhine and Danube. The theme was taken up in the Liber historiæ Francorum of 727 A.D., perhaps by a monk favorable to the Merovingians. Antenor, Aeneas' flight companion, founded Sicambria, on the Danube, in Pannonia (present-day Hungary). These Trojans eventually migrated to Germania and were found with King Marcomir, a ancestor to Merovingians, whose tribes made inroads into the Roman Empire. Virgil's Aeneid was still well known around the year 600 A.D. Added to the myth concerning the Franks, a part concerning the Gauls: a group of Trojans left the Sicambria of the Danube to settle into Gaul and they founded Lutetia. They then became the Gallo-Romans, hence the not so bad reception of Franks in Gaul. In France, all that eventually became settled during the classical Middle Ages and even in the Modern era and was always defended by the monarchy and the elites, probably especially after around the 12th century, the insistence on the Germanic lineage of the Franks was attenuated. Against bad luck good heart, these elites, after Azincourt and the destruction of the Capetian nobility, were to refer to the Gauls, a people from whom the Franks would have been issued and which would have migrated to Germania and then returned. That Gallic theory was to be strongly supported by some of French revolutionaries against the insistence, carried by some like Montesquieu, in the 18th century, about the Germanic origins of French nobility, as that eventually led to the nationalist history in France by the late 19th century
